Paterson, John (possibly Patterson) Born: 1720-1735 (?), in Scotland. From family tradition and the research of several amateur genealogists, the following dates have been uncovered. Most research to date indicate that he was a Lieutenant serving under General Wolfe while the British won North America from the French. circa 1750-57 Entered British army, 15th or 80th regiment of Foot. 1758-1761 Served in Canada under General Wolfe (likely the 15th regiment) Sept., 1758 Very likely was in Gaspe with General Wolfe 1759 Fought at Louisburg and Quebec City (Siege of Quebec) May 4, 1761 Promoted to Lieutenant circa 1765 Settled in Sunny Bank, near Gaspe, Quebec Nov. 3, 1768 Officially retired from the Army 1765 Listed in the Census of Gaspe, with a wife, 2 boys under 6 and 3 girls 1777 Listed in the Census of “Gaspez” in Lower Canada His name is listed in the Muster Rolls at the Public Archives of Canada: MG 13, War Office 12, Volume 3228 His name is also found in the Monthly Returns from Canada: WOO 17, Vol. 1492 The names John, Peter, Daniel, Margaret, and Mary were very common in the first few generations of Patterson’s in the Gaspe area. His first born son was Peter, and the second was John, implying that his grandfather’s name may have been Peter and John. Other commonly used names were Sarah, James, Thomas, Charles, William, and George. The Genealogical Society of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints have several pages of John Patterson’s listed in their Microfiche Index, born in Scotland between 1720 and 1740.
