In addition to considerable uncertainty regarding dates, several controversial issues exist in records of this this family, including:

* An 1819 land claim shows a Richard as son of Margaret McPherson, John's second wife.

** Raymond Patterson stated that John married Margaret Mullin. The Malbay Church Register states that Margaret Mullin married John Patton from N.S., March 14, 1839. Some Mullin family records indicate that John's wife was Martha . In any case , he, his wife, and one year old daughter, Christianna, burned to death in their home in Wakeham, in 1842.
