Bertram Dow accused of murder without premeditation
Gilles Gagné
PORT DANIEL - A 48 year-old man from Port Daniel West, Bertram "Bert"
Dow, was accused of murder without premeditation on March 15th at the New
Carlisle Court House, two days after he allegedly fired the shot that killed
his third neighbour, retired school teacher Russell Duguay, in the victim's
house.
On the evening of Saturday, March 13th, slightly before 9:00 pm, the
accused, who was enraged for reasons that is still unknown, started to shoot
in his own house, located at 132 Highway 132. His wife was at the house but
she was not injured. Then, Bert Dow crossed the road to his sister's house,
situated on 115 Highway 132. He also fired one or more shots there,
shattering the front window but nobody was injured.
Then the accused allegedly crossed the road again, and to the house of
Mr. Russell Duguay, located at 118 Highway 132. The victim received a shot
in the chest. Critically injured, he was sent to Chandler Hospital, where
he died about seven hours later, slightly after 4:00 am Sunday morning.
Listuguj and Cross Point to work together for
development
Gilles Gagné
LISTUGUJ - The Municipality of Cross Point and the band council of
Listuguj have signed a five year agreement which confirms that both
communities will work together in economic, social and cultural development
by managing a common secretariat.
For over a century, white people and Micmacs have lived mostly in
indifference toward each other, sometimes in a hostile atmosphere but rarely
in harmony.
But since the middle of the 1990s, agreements in specific fields have
been reached, such as the management of a sewerage system and waste
disposal, fire fighting assistance when required and the Intercommunity
Harmony project, where children from Listuguj and Cross Point have learned
to share different activities.
Gaspé Fish Hatchery Corporation wants answers
Jeanie LeLacheur
A recent announcement by the CED (Canada Economic Development) to
support a salmonid technology transfer and selection center to be
established at the former Pisciculture station in Gaspé is being met with
surprise and concern by members of the² Corporation récréotouristique de la
station piscicole de Gaspé².
President of the corporation Valetta Patterson admits that the
organization has experienced some difficulty in the past couple of years,
but is completely at a loss as to why the CED would announce a $97,347
non-repayable contribution to CTSS "Centre de transfer et de sélection des
salmonides" while the pisciculture still belongs to the CRSPG.
